1When Should You Apply for DACA Renewal?
USCIS recommends applying for DACA renewal at least 120 to 150 days (4 to 5 months) before your current period of deferred action expires. Waiting too long risks a gap in your employment authorization, which can affect your job and driver's license status. If your DACA expires while your renewal is pending, you may still be able to work — but check with a professional to confirm your situation.
2Documents Needed for DACA Renewal
For a DACA renewal, you will need: (1) Form I-821D — Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals; (2) Form I-765 — Application for Employment Authorization; (3) Form I-765WS — Worksheet; (4) two passport-style photos; (5) a copy of your current EAD (front and back); (6) a copy of any prior I-797 approval notices; (7) the filing fee of $495 (check the USCIS website for current amounts).
3Step-by-Step Renewal Process
Step 1 — Download the current versions of I-821D, I-765, and I-765WS from USCIS.gov. Step 2 — Complete all three forms carefully. Step 3 — Take passport photos (2x2 inch format). Step 4 — Prepare your payment (money order or check payable to 'U.S. Department of Homeland Security'). Step 5 — Assemble your package in the order: cover letter, forms, photos, payment, supporting copies. Step 6 — Mail to the correct USCIS Lockbox address based on your state. Step 7 — Keep a copy of everything you submit.
4What Happens After You Submit?
USCIS will mail you a receipt notice (Form I-797C) within a few weeks. You can use your receipt notice as proof of a pending renewal if your current EAD expires while waiting. Processing times vary — check the USCIS website for current estimates. If you receive a Request for Evidence (RFE), respond promptly and completely with all requested documentation.
