1When Can You Renew by Mail (DS-82)?

You can renew your U.S. passport by mail using Form DS-82 if your most recent passport is less than 15 years old, was issued after your 16th birthday, is not damaged, was issued in your current legal name (or you can document a name change), and you currently have it in your possession. If any of these conditions don't apply, you must apply in person at a passport acceptance facility.

2What You Need for Passport Renewal

For a mail-in renewal you will need: (1) Completed Form DS-82; (2) your most recent U.S. passport; (3) one new passport photo (2x2 inch, taken within the last 6 months); (4) fee payment — $130 for routine, $60 additional for expedited service as of 2026 (check travel.state.gov for current amounts); (5) a photocopy of name-change documentation if applicable (certified copy of marriage certificate, court order, etc.).

3Passport Photo Requirements

Passport photos must be 2x2 inches, printed on matte or glossy photo paper, taken within 6 months, show a full-face view with a neutral expression, and have a plain white or off-white background. No glasses, hats, or head coverings (unless worn daily for religious reasons). Your head must measure between 1 inch and 1-3/8 inches from chin to crown. Many errors come from photos that don't meet these specifications — DFT can advise on photo requirements.

4Processing Times and Expediting

Routine passport renewal currently takes 6 to 8 weeks. Expedited service (additional $60 fee) typically takes 2 to 3 weeks. If you need your passport sooner due to urgent travel, you may be able to schedule an in-person appointment at a Regional Passport Agency. Always check the latest processing times at travel.state.gov before applying — times fluctuate based on demand.

5How to Submit Your Renewal

Assemble your package in order: DS-82 form on top, passport photo clipped (not stapled) to the form, check or money order for the correct fee, old passport, and any supporting documents. Mail via USPS Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express. Do not fold or staple your passport. Keep a copy of your DS-82 and all documents. DFT Digital Multiservice helps clients prepare complete, accurate passport renewal packages — ready to mail same day.
